♥My English learning history. Rachel - Wanderland

Among all languages, English is undoubtedly the most important international language over the world now. A common language provides us with an opportunity to communicate with people around us, to express our views to others and to impress the others via words. One can never live without friends, just like we can never work without words.

Since I am not a native speaker of English, learning it as a second language was undoubtedly very challenging at the very beginning. Now thinking back, I am really lucky to have a pair of lovely parents whom spent hours talking to me in English when I was small. They not only made me more willing to speak in English in everyday life, but also helped me to build up a strong foundation in oral English. They also sent me to England for summer school when I was in primary school so that I got a chance to talk to the native speakers and gained confidence in speaking English from my traveling experience. Furthermore, they bought me a numerous collection of interesting story books that allured me into the reading sea.♥

Reading is still one of my favourite things to do now. I love reading and get inspiration from different authors. I still remember I was once very addicted to a series of books --- Shopaholic. Rachel - WanderlandRachel - WanderlandRachel - WanderlandRachel - WanderlandRachel - Wanderland I bought every single book in this series and I read each of them for at least three times. I was so obsessed that I even registered as a writer in Fanfiction.net. (For your reference, if you’re a creative person who loves to unleash your imagination through writing, you may feel free to visit this website: Http://www.fanfiction.net.) As a new writer there, I read a lot of writing from others, exclusively from those who’re also top fans of the Shopaholic. However, since most of the writers in the network are British or Americans, I felt my ability in writing is just much inferior to them. I was unhappy and I realized that I must improve my ability to write in English so that I could write my mind out! So, I read more and more and I learned how to write in a more natural way by asking and trying. I asked for opinions from other foreigners in the same fan fiction network and tried to improve my writing according to their advice. It is really good to have friends from other European countries because you can learn a lot from them in daily conversations. It is not because I was being forced to type in English when talking to them online, but they taught me a lot of slangs and some unusual phrases that I never came across before. Isn’t it good that you can learn native English even when you don’t have a chance to study aboard? My fruitful experience as a fan fiction writer gave me a chance to meet more friends from other countries and most importantly, a golden opportunity to learn how to write good and native English.

Now, I always write when the words come to me. It’s like whenever I’m happy or sad, I love to express my feelings via the magic of words. Words are something dead, yet they are something lively when you add your soul to them.♥ I also learned that a good command of English is not just about how many vocabulary or difficult phrases you can use, but how well you can fully express your ideas through the words in selection. One thing I can guarantee you is that: if you read more and write more, your English will just magically improve in a way that you may not even notice. Learning English is like building a glamorous palace. You can’t rush and you have to be patient. You have to start from the basic, moving from a strong foundation to other pretty little decorations.

Furthermore, my desire to learn English grew intensively when I was a senior in high school. Being an active member in the English Debating Team exposed me to various current issues and hot debates in society. Through all public debates and evaluation programs, I developed strong analytical skills and learned how to think from various perspectives. Moreover, I learned the magic of words. The way you express yourself and the selection of words do make a difference in presenting your ideas!

Learning a language is a lifelong journey. I am really devoted to learn and to improve my English because for me, English is just part of my life. Every day, I write in English, I talk to other people in English, I sing in English… I’m just living in a world which is FULL of English.

Some people might think learning English is dull and time-consuming. Yet, I think learning English is fun and fulfilling. I simply enjoy using English in my everyday life and I think the more you use a language, the more you learn about that language. It is just like: I improve my English when I read books, when I talk to my friends, when I watch foreign movies, etc. Learning is not limited to text books and classrooms, we can learn English everywhere!

Don't you think learning English can be FUN? Rachel - Wanderland

Hey Rachel,

I read your learning history and must say that I find it very interesting. Your writing is just awesome! I like how you used all the metaphors (learning English = building a glamorous palace etc) that describe your feelings and attitude towards language learning just perfectly. Like you, I found the motivation for learning English through the contacts of native speakers. School lessons were never a great help to me (if you're interested you can find my language learning history in the "futurama" group). You didn't write much about your language learning at school. Does that mean it was never important to you either?

Greetings from Berlin,
Anke

You are really lucky when compared with my own English learning experience - could travel to summer school and have a lovely pair of parents talking with you in English when you were small. You are really my goal and my role model to learn from - write beautifully and speak fluently in English. Let's work hard together!!
